Thursday September 14, 2017 – Two arrested in human trafficking investigation

Human Trafficking Arrests:
A 22-year-old Peterborough man and his teenage girlfriend have been arrested and charged following a human trafficking investigation.

In late August 2017 the Peterborough Police Service received information related to local human trafficking and began an investigation.

It was reported that a Peterborough man and his teenage girlfriend had coerced another local teenage female, whom they know, into creating an ad for sexual purposes and then having dates with men, exchanging sexual services for money. Any money made by the victim was turned over to the co-accused. The incidents took place between July and August 2017.

Through the investigation it was also revealed that the male accused had made and distributed a video containing sexual images of himself and his girlfriend to several people.

As a result of the investigation warrants were issued for the arrest of the male accused and the female accused. On September 13, 2017 the co-accused were arrested on the warrants.

A 22-year-old Peterborough male is charged with the following:

  • Traffic in persons under 18 years of age
  • Procuring under 18 years of age
  • Material benefits from sexual services under 18 years of age
  • Makes, prints, publishes or possess for the purpose of publication child pornography
  • Possession of child pornography
  • Imports, distributes, sells or possess for the purpose of distribution or sale any child pornography
  • Fail to comply with the conditions of an undertaking

A Peterborough female under the age of 18 years is charged with the following:

  • Traffic in persons under 18 years of age
  • Procuring under 18 years of age
  • Material benefits from sexual services under 18 years of age

Both co-accused are scheduled to appear in court later today (Sept. 14).

As the male accused is in a domestic relationship with the female accused, whom is also a victim and a young person in this incident, the name of the co- accused will not be released in order to protect the identity of the victim(s) and comply with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Domestic Assault Arrest:
A 58-year-old Peterborough man has been charged following a domestic assault investigation.

On September 13, 2017 the accused and the victim, a woman in her 50’s, were at their Peterborough residence when the accused threatened and assaulted the victim. Police were called and officers attended.

As a result of the investigation shortly after midnight on September 14, 2017 the accused was arrested and charged with domestic assault and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

The accused was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court later today (Sept. 14).

The name of the accused will not be released in order to protect the identity of the victim in this domestic incident.

Fraud Arrest:
A Peterborough woman has been arrested and charged after bank cards were stolen out of vehicles and fraudulently used at local stores.

In the early morning hours of September 11, 2017 an unknown female suspect entered a vehicle parked on Corrigan Crescent and stole a wallet and spare car keys. The suspect then fraudulently used the victim’s credit card to purchase items at a local gas station and at a local convenience store.

On September 12, 2017 police were called to Collison Crescent home for a similar matter where a female had stolen a purse, and other items, from a vehicle and then fraudulently used the victim’s bank card at a Peterborough convenience store.

Through the investigation the female suspect was identified. At midnight on September 14, 2017 officers attended a St. Mary’s Street residence where, as a result of the investigation, the accused was arrested and charged.

Connie Anne Desjardins, 35, of St. Mary’s Street, Peterborough, is charged with the following:

  • Fraud under $5,000 X2
  • Theft under $5,000 X2

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on September 28, 2017.

Possession of Stolen Property Arrest:
The Peterborough Police Service has arrested and charged a 21-year-old woman with possession of stolen property.

In early August 2017 a ring was stolen from a Mount Pleasant Road home in the Township of Cavan Monaghan. The theft was reported to police and officers investigation.

On August 3, 2017 a female attended a George Street pawn shop where the stolen ring was pawned. Through the investigation the female suspect was identified.

On September 10, 2017 the accused attended the Peterborough police station, where as a result of the investigation, she was placed under arrest.

Salena Phillips, 21, of George Street North, is charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on October 5, 2017.
