Auxiliary Unit

The Auxiliary Police Unit is NOT accepting applications.

There are many citizens who wish to experience police work through active involvement. The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service Auxiliary Unit offers opportunities to citizens to become an integral part of the police organization in a volunteer capacity.

Auxiliary Members are selected on the basis of their ability to complete the training program and their availability for service throughout the year. Members must be available a minimum of eight hours each month, and that he or she attend regular in-service training sessions and will commit to a two year volunteer term.

Initial training consists of classroom instruction, such as, powers of arrest and criminal code, physical restraining methods and firearm qualification. Although Auxiliary members are not issued firearms, they must be capable of handling them, in extraordinary or critical circumstances.

Auxiliary police officers are used at parades, Police Week displays, other events promoting crime prevention, searches for missing person, or as observers on regular police patrols. Specifically, Auxiliary members are also prominent at Remembrance Day celebrations and the annual local parades.

The Auxiliary team is an integral part of the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service. In 2010, members of that team provided the citizens of our communities with more than 5,000 volunteer hours of work. Their efforts contribute to the good quality of life in our municipality.

The Peterborough Lakefield Police Service has an authorized complement of 32 Auxiliary members, under the direct supervision of Inspector Ted Boynton. The Auxiliary Unit is currently comprised of 2 Staff Sergeant, 3 Sergeants and 18 Constables.
