Crime prevention is one of the five core functions for police in Ontario. Members of the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service are committed to preventing crime through education and partnerships with community stakeholders. The Community Service Unit supports the Operations division through a variety of crime prevention initiatives. Providing education to the youth in our community is the main focus, with officers being partnered with every school in the City of Peterborough and Village of Lakefield. Programs offered include Elmer the Safety Elephant, Community Helper, and Values, Influences and Peers (VIP) in the elementary schools; VIP Refresher and the Law in the secondary schools. These programs are augmented with topical sessions on various subjects including cyberbullying and drugs. Community Services Officers further support students through the CAA Patroller program, the Challenges, Beliefs and Changes program, and other student events.
The Community Services Unit also takes the lead in providing education to other groups in our community, including seniors and businesses. Presentations, committee work and community events such as Crime Prevention Week, Family Week and Drug Awareness Week provide additional opportunities to engage with citizens.
