K-9 Unit
The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Canine (K9) Unit was formed in 1997 and consisted of two Police Service Dogs (PSD). Our original dogs have been replaced and our canine strength remains at two. Currently, Constable Jeff Chartier and PSD Harris and Constable Brent Mason and PSD Knight can be seen patrolling the streets of Peterborough and Lakefield.
Both Harris and Knight are German Shepherds. This breed is chosen for their physical ability, strength and intelligence. A strong temperament is very important as these dogs are expected to perform in stressful situations.
Police Service Dogs have many responsibilities. Their expertise includes narcotic detection, tracking, agility, article search, building search, open search, chase and apprehension, and handler protection. Our handlers are on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. All handlers must complete an extensive thirteen-week course where the handler and dog learn as a team. Our PSD teams are trained and continue maintenance training under direction of the Niagara Regional Police Canine Unit.
Police Service Dogs are highly-trained and assertive animals, however, they are able to interact with the public. The K9 teams also attend numerous public functions and school presentations.
