Traffic Unit

The Traffic Unit provides general and specific support in traffic policy direction for this Service.  This is accomplished through ongoing activities in the areas of:

  1. analysis of the traffic activity in the City of Peterborough and Village of Lakefield;
  2. consultation with members of the community and related agencies;
  3. education and training for all members involved in traffic management.

The Traffic Unit identifies goals and objectives for traffic management, and consists of the following areas:

  1. the Traffic Unit plans and develops traffic policies and strategies for this service;
  2. the Accident Reconstruction Team provides an expert level of investigation into a wide range of major traffic incidents and is a technical/information source for all areas of the Service;
  3. the Breath Analysis Technicians provide technical expertise and information in all areas related to impaired driving.

Selective Traffic Enforcement

The Traffic Unit shall develop selective traffic strategies and programs that meet the needs established through statistical analysis and the consultative process.

The Traffic Unit will also correspond with Driver Review and Control, Ministry of Transportation, to request they review drivers licences of those found to be incompetent to drive.

The ultimate goal of traffic law enforcement is to achieve voluntary compliance by all persons using the highways, so as to reduce collision rates. Enforcement is not based on quotas, but is of a direct nature based on identified needs and resulting from information including:

  1. high collision locations;
  2. public complaints and requests; and
  3. an officer's own identification of needs
