Investigative Services consists of three working groups.
The Major Crime Unit is responsible for all major crimes against persons. The officers of this unit possess the required knowledge, skills and abilities to conduct complex investigations and are responsible for the investigation of homicides and attempts, non-familial abductions and attempts, missing persons where foul play is suspected, found human remains where homicide cannot be ruled out, sexual assaults, financial institution robberies and any other incident deemed to be a Major Case. A Detective Sergeant oversees this unit.
The Active Crime Unit is responsible for investigations related to property crimes. These incidents include Break and Enters, Retail Theft, Theft from Vehicles, Stolen Vehicles and Street Robberies. This Unit regularly assists in criminal investigations providing assistance to frontline Uniformed Officers. The Active Crime Unit receives support from all divisions within our Service, receiving valuable information from Uniform Officers, Intelligence Unit, Crime Stoppers and the Forensic Identification Unit. A Detective Sergeant oversees this unit.
The ICAD Unit is responsible for leading the Police Service in utilizing the Intelligence Led-Policing Model. The Intelligence Unit and Crime Analyst are responsible for the collection, collation and dissemination of various streams of information. The Asset Forfeiture Unit assists in the seizing of Proceeds of Crime and Offence Related Property. The Drug Unit has expanded to incorporate the Four Pillars Approach - Harm Reduction/Treatment, Prevention, Education and Enforcement. This has resulted in the formation of the Peterborough Drug Stategy, a mutually integral relationship with Police, Community groups, agencies and stakeholders. A Detective Sergeant oversees this unit.
The Investigative Service Division also includes the Forensic Identification Unit, ViCLAS and Powercase Coordinator, Firearms Officer and Crime Stoppers. Each of these units provides support to all members of the Police Service in helping to solve crime.
A Staff Sergeant is designated as the Service’s Major Case Manager. The Staff Sergeant is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Investigative Services Division and is responsible for the Major Case Management of threshold investigations, Sexual Offender Registry management, ViCLAS and PowerCase submissions.
The Divisional Commander is an Inspector who provides administrative support and is responsible for budget allocation and oversees the Investigative Services Division and all activities that are performed therein. The Divisional Commander provides detailed reports to other members of the Executive, Police Service Board members and various government agencies.
