Friday March 15, 2019 – Cavan, Ontario man facing several charges including impaired and dangerous driving following Wednesday night motor vehicle collision

Impaired/Dangerous operation arrest:

A 25-year-old Cavan, Ontario man is facing several charges including impaired and dangerous driving following a Wednesday night motor vehicle collision.

On March 13, 2019 at approximately 9:45 p.m. it was reported to police that a motor vehicle collision had taken place in the area of Towerhill Road and Brittany Street in Peterborough and following the collision the driver fled the area. It was also reported that during the incident the driver had been operating the vehicle in a dangerous manner. Further investigation revealed that on the same night the accused had been involved in an altercation with two males during which time the males were assaulted.

Through the investigation the driver of the suspect vehicle was identified and officers located the suspect at a residence in the Township of Cavan Monaghan. While speaking with the male driver officers noted an odour of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver’s breath. A subsequent breath test revealed the driver had more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system while operating a motor vehicle.

As a result of the investigation Darren James Shaughnessy, 25, of Maplegrove Road, Cavan, Ontario, was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Operation while impaired by alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while prohibited
  • Failure to stop after accident
  • Dangerous operation
  • Assault X2
  • Possess more than one licence (Highway Traffic Act offence)
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance (Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act offence)

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on March 14, 2019.

Robbery with theft arrest:

A 48-year-old Peterborough man has been charged with robbery with theft and assault causing bodily harm following an incident at a Peterborough apartment earlier in March.

On March 9, 2019 the accused was at a Peterborough apartment visiting an acquaintance. It was reported that while at the apartment the accused attempted to steal an amount of money from the male victim at which point a physical altercation took place and the victim was assaulted. The accused then left the apartment with the money and police were contacted. The victim attended a local hospital for treatment to his injuries.

On the evening of March 13, 2019 officers located the accused walking in the area of McDonnel and Aylmer Streets.

As a result of the investigation Larry Junior Carriere, 48, of Crystal Drive, Peterborough, was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Robbery with theft
  • Assault causing bodily harm

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on March 14, 2019.

Break-in: Murray Street church

The Peterborough Police Service is investigating following a break-in at a Murray Street church.

Sometime between 11 p.m. on March 12, 2019 and 7 a.m. on March 13, 2019 unknown person(s) broke into a church located on Murray Street in Peterborough stealing items including cash, a bank card, cheques and tools.

Break-in: King Street restaurant

The Peterborough Police Service is asking anyone with information to come forward following a break-in to a King Street restaurant.

Between 1:30 p.m. on March 10, 2019 and 9 a.m. on March 19, 2019 unknown person(s) broke into a restaurant on King Street. Once inside the unknown person(s) stole an amount of cash.
