Tuesday November 26, 2019 – Peterborough man charged with assault followning hate bias crime at public facility

A 31-year-old Peterborough man has been arrested and charged with assault following a hate bias crime at a public facility.

On the morning of November 24, 2019 the victim was working at a public facility when the accused became agitated, uttered racial slurs at the victim and spat on the victim.

The incident was reported to police and officers investigated. Police contacted the accused and later that same day the accused turned himself in at the police station.

As a result of the investigation Travis Justin Cassidy, 31, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Assault
  • Fail to comply with a probation order

Due to the comments made at the time of the offence this incident has been classified as a hate bias crime. A hate crime is a criminal offence committed against a person or property which is motivated by the suspect/offender’s hate bias against a racial, religious, ethnic, sexual orientation or disability group.
