Friday January 10, 2020 – Peterborough man charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm following domestic dispute

Assault causing bodily harm Arrest:

A 43-year-old Peterborough man has been arrested and charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm following a domestic dispute in late December.

On December 19, 2019 at approximately 8 p.m. officers were dispatched to a Peterborough residence for a domestic dispute. It was reported that during the dispute the accused assaulted an adult female he is currently in an on-again-off-again relationship with. During the assault the victim’s teenage daughter attempted to intervene at which point she was also assaulted by the accused. The accused then fled the residence and police were called.

On December 20, 2019 a warrant was issued for the arrest of the accused for the offences of assault and assault causing bodily harm. A warrant had also been previously issued on September 17, 2019 for the offence of theft under $5,000 from an unrelated incident.

Shortly after 3 p.m. on January 8, 2020 an officer on patrol in the area of Stewart Street located the accused where he was arrested on the two warrants. During the investigation the accused was found to be in possession of an amount of cocaine. He was further charged with possession of a schedule I substance.

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on January 9, 2020.

In order to protect the identity of the victims in this incident the name of the accused will not be released.

Domestic assault Arrest:

The Peterborough Police Service has arrested and charged a 74-year-old Peterborough man with domestic assault following a Wednesday morning incident.

On January 8, 2020 at approximately 10:50 a.m. police received a call for service to a local residence for a domestic dispute. It was reported that when the female victim attempted to wake-up the accused, who had been sleeping, the accused woke and assaulted the victim. When officers arrived the accused was located still at the residence.

As a result of the investigation the accused was arrested and charged with assault and fail to comply with a probation order.

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on January 9, 2020.

In order to protect the identity of the victims in this incident the name of the accused will not be released.

Possession of stolen property Arrest:

A 35-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged after items including bank cards and a cell phone were stolen from a vehicle parked at a local convenience store.

At approximately 6:45 a.m. on January 9, 2020 the victim stopped at a Hunter Street East convenience store to ask for directions regarding a delivery he was making. The victim re-attended his vehicle and continued with his delivery until he discovered that property has been stolen from the vehicle including a wallet, cell phone and banking cards.

The victim drove back to the convenience store where he saw a suspicious male in the area who began running when he noticed the victim. The victim began to pursue the accused and a witness in the area at the time also began chasing the accused.

The witness eventually caught and apprehended the accused. Police were called and attended the area. During the investigation the accused was found to be in possession of the victim’s bank card.

As a result of the investigation Stephen Jan Schoenmaker, 35, of Murray Street, Peterborough, was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on January 9, 2020.
