Scam Alert! Police warning the community about a new scam circulating in the area

The Peterborough Police Service is warning the community about a new scam circulating in the area.

We recently received several phone calls from persons reporting that they have received a telephone call from a person stating they are an “officer of the government.” The fake “officer” then provides a badge number to seem more legitimate.  People are being told by the fraudsters that they are investigating several accounts being opened up under their Social Insurance Number (SIN) and are asked to confirm their name, last three numbers of their SIN and their postal code.

We remind residents to never give any person information over the phone, especially their SIN number, before confirming the identity of the caller. Always hang up, call your bank, a family member or a trusted friend before disclosing any personal information or making a payment over the phone.
