Thursday January 23, 2020 – Update regarding investigation into posters in the downtown

Over the past few weeks the Peterborough Police Service received reports of posters with potentially concerning content that were being posted throughout the City.

In consultation with the Crown Attorney’s office it was determined that these posters do not meet the threshold to be deemed a hate crime.

Our Service continues to encourage anyone that sees material with potentially concerning content being posted to immediately contact police and do not assume police are already aware of it or assume someone else has reported it. To make a report please call the Peterborough Police Service at 705-876-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.stopcrimehere.ca.

In 2017 our Service developed and re- launched the NoH8 cards that were distributed by police and other partners. The cards help explain what a hate crime or hate incident is, what to do if a person is a victim or a witness of a hate crime or incident and provides phone numbers to various community agencies and partners. The cards are still available in the lobby of the police station.

We will continue to work with our community partners to ensure our community is a place where all residents feel safe and welcome.
