Tuesday March 24, 2020 – Peterborough teen charged with two counts of arson following dumpster fires

Arson Arrest:

A 15-year-old Peterborough teen has been arrested and charged with two counts of arson following dumpster fires at Brookdale Plaza.

Shortly after 4 p.m. on March 19, 2020 police were dispatched to Brookdale Plaza on Chemong Road for a complaint of several youth on the roof of the plaza. When officers arrived it was further reported that Peterborough Fire Services was also attending as there was a fire in a dumpster behind the plaza. The fire was extinguished without incident. Police were aware of a similar incident of a dumpster fire at the rear of the plaza on March 17, 2020.

Through the investigation the suspect for both incidents was identified. On March 19, 2020 officers attended a Peterborough residence where the accused was located. As a result of the investigation a 15-year-old male Peterborough teen was arrested and charged with two counts of arson – damage to property.

The youth was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 25, 2020.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act the name of a young person cannot be released.

Break-in: George Street North business

The Peterborough Police Service is investigating following a break-in to a George Street North cellphone store.

On March 23, 2020 at approximately 2:45 a.m. an unknown person broke into a cellphone shop located on George Street North by smashing a window. Once inside the unknown person stole cellphone related products.

The suspect is described as follows:

  • Caucasian
  • Male
  • Late 20’s to 30’s
  • 5’10” – 6’1″ tall
  • Long beige winter jacket with hoodie
  • Beige pants
  • Short brown hair
  • Goatee

Theft from vehicle:

The Peterborough Police Service is asking anyone with information to come forward following a theft from a vehicle parked in a Lansdowne Street West lot.

Sometime between 9 p.m. on March 22, 2020 and 5:30 a.m. on March 23, 2020 unknown person(s) broke into a locked vehicle parked in a Lansdowne Street West commercial parking lot. Once inside the vehicle thieves stole cash and prescription medication.
