Break and Enter and Dangerous Driving Arrest
A 32-year-old Peterborough man is facing a break and enter charge along with numerous driving charges after an incident on George Street North Tuesday evening.
At approximately 6:15pm, January 12, 2021, police were called about a vehicle that had been parked in the intersection of Barnardo Avenue and George Street North blocking a lane of traffic. Another motorist had attempted to help but the accused rammed the vehicle pushing it across the road. The offending vehicle continued to be driven erratically and other motorists were forced to take evasive action before it left the scene.
Just after the calls about the vehicle, police received a 9-1-1 call about a break and enter at home on George Street North.
The accused is currently bound by a release order with the condition to stay away from the residence.
When police arrived on the scene, they found the accused in the basement.
As a result, 32-year-old Fungai Madzongwe of Peterborough was arrested and charged with:
- Break and enter with intent
- Mischief under $5000
- Breach of a release order
In the case of the vehicle collision, Madzongwe was charged with:
- Dangerous driving
- Failure to stop after an accident
- Improper stop at a traffic signal intersection
- Fail to yield to traffic on through highway
- Proceeding contrary to sign at intersection
- Driving the wrong way on a one-way
- Drive motor vehicle to perform a stunt in oncoming traffic
The accused was held in custody and will appear in court today, January 13, 2021.
Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation
Peterborough Police Service is investigating after responding to reports a vehicle had struck the concrete steps of a building on Townsend Street Monday morning.
Peterborough Police, fire and EMS attended the scene between Aylmer Street North and George Street North just before 7 a.m. January 11, 2021 and a male was transported to Peterborough Regional Health Centre to be treated for his injuries.
The extent of damage to the building is not known. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
